European Parliament recognized as genocide the war crimes committed by ISIS against Christians and other religious minorities throughout the Middle East and Africa
2/5/16 – (Newsweek) The European Parliament unanimously passed a resolution on Thursday recognizing the Islamic State militant group’s (ISIS) systematic killing and persecution of religious minorities in the Middle East as a genocide.
The vote, decided by a show of hands at a European Parliament plenary session in the French city of Strasbourg, was the first time the body has recognized an ongoing conflict situation as a genocide. The resolution states that those who intentionally commit atrocities for ethnic or religious reasons should be brought to justice for violations against international law, crimes against humanity, and genocide.
The resolution called on the EU Member States to bring “protection and aid, including military protection and aid” to all targeted groups in conformity with international law and obligations. The resolution also threatens legal proceedings to states and individuals supporting ISIS.
It went on to call upon EU Members to prevent their citizens from joining ISIS and “to ensure that, should they do so, they are criminally prosecuted as soon as possible.”
ISIS has systematically persecuted religious minorities in its self-proclaimed caliphate in Iraq and Syria, kidnapping hundreds of Assyrian Christians in Syria, forcing Christians to live under its radical strand of Islam in the central Syrian city of Al-Qaryatain, enslaving and raping Yazidi women and children in northern Iraq, as well as killing Yazidi men and dumping them in mass graves.
The resolution goes on to detail several specific incidents in which ISIS committed numerous international crimes against Christians and other religious minorities in the Middle East, from the more than 150,000 Iraqi Christians who fled Mosul in August 2014 to the kidnapping of more than 220 Assyrian Christians in February 2015.
Is it even possible that this could impact in any way the U.S. and the Bush and Obama administrations since they created, equipped and protected ISIS?
The recent U.N. report confirms ISIS genocide.
