Inconvenient truth: The real barrier to peace isn’t Israeli settlements, or Israeli anything — it’s the refusal even of “moderate” Palestinians to accept the Jewish state’s existence.
Even as Palestinians are stabbing Jews on Israeli streets, President Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry still save their harshest criticism for Israel’s settlement-building and its “incitement” to violence.
They’d do well to notice what Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas recently had to say in Arabic to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.
Amid a long harangue against Israel, Abbas asked: “For how long will this protracted Israeli occupation of our land last? After 67 years, how long?”
Now, 67 years takes us back to 1948 — the year of modern Israel’s creation. That’s nearly two decades before the Six-Day War, when Israel captured the West Bank and Gaza.
In other words, Abbas sees “occupied” Palestine as not just the territory taken in 1967 — but as every inch of Israel.
No, he didn’t misspeak. He said it again moments later, ranting of “holy sites which have been desecrated every other second, again and again for seven decades now.”
Just how significant is this? So significant that the official Palestinian news agency WAFA omitted the statements from its English translation of the transcript. Only thanks to Palestinian Media Watch , an Israel-based group that monitors Palestinian media, did the truth emerge.
